Original Medicare famously skips dental and vision. But once you add the right plan, some surprisingly specific procedures — from clear aligners to laser eye surgery — can end up partly covered. Here's what to actually look for.

Here's the part almost nobody explains clearly: Original Medicare Parts A and B don't cover routine dental or vision care at all — no cleanings, no glasses, no exams, with very narrow medical exceptions. That surprises a lot of people who assumed "Medicare" meant everything.

The coverage does exist, though — it just lives in a different place. A dental and vision plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan that bundles dental and vision benefits in, can open the door to procedures most people assume are entirely out of pocket.

Procedures worth a second look

Coverage varies a lot by plan and provider, but these are the ones people are most often surprised to find partial coverage for.

Invisalign & clear aligners

Some dental plans with orthodontic riders offer a percentage allowance toward clear aligner treatment, particularly when there's a documented bite or alignment issue rather than a purely cosmetic request.

LASIK & vision correction

LASIK itself is usually excluded as elective, but many vision plans offer a discount allowance toward laser vision correction through partner providers — worth asking about even when it isn't listed as "covered."

Routine eye exams & eyewear

Annual eye exams, an allowance toward frames or lenses, and sometimes contact lens fittings are common baseline benefits on standalone vision plans and many Medicare Advantage add-ons.

Major dental work

Crowns, root canals, and extractions sit outside what basic cleanings cover. Plans with a "major services" tier typically cover a percentage after a waiting period, rather than the full cost from day one.
