What is happening to UnitedHealthcare plans in 2027?

UnitedHealthcare is ending one Medicare Advantage plan, trimming some PPO options, and leaning further into HMOs. Here's what's actually been confirmed, who's affected, and what to do while enrollment is open.

If you've seen headlines about UnitedHealthcare Medicare plans 2027, you may be wondering whether your own coverage is about to disappear. The short version is that some members are affected and most are not — but the details matter, and the right move depends entirely on which plan you're in.

UnitedHealthcare unveiled its 2027 lineup on October 1, and the plan-change notices for affected members are dated October 2. Because Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, there's a real window right now to review your options without any special permission.

The short answer: UnitedHealthcare is discontinuing one Medicare Advantage plan covering roughly 390,000 members for 2027. It is not leaving Medicare Advantage — the company says more than 94% of Medicare-eligible people nationwide will still have access to a UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan.

If you received a notice, you have a defined set of choices and deadlines, covered below. If you didn't, your plan renews, but it can still change in cost, network, and benefits.

What's been confirmed about UnitedHealthcare plan changes for 2027

01

One Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued

UnitedHealthcare has confirmed that UnitedHealthcare plan discontinuation 2027 applies to a single Medicare Advantage plan with about 390,000 members, according to Healthcare Dive's coverage and other major outlets. It does not end the company's entire lineup, and affected members can move into a different UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan.

02

The changes mostly affect PPO members

Reporting indicates the reductions are concentrated in PPO plans. UnitedHealthcare says 66% of its members will have access to both HMO and PPO options in 2027, down from 70% in 2026, as it exits some areas with a higher share of PPO plans.

03

More emphasis on HMO networks

The company says about 95% of Medicare-eligible people in its footprint will have access to a Medicare Advantage HMO plan in 2027. HMOs typically use tighter provider networks, which is why checking your doctors against the network before enrolling matters more this year.

04

Some county-level service area changes

UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage service area changes have been reported for roughly 140 counties, plus an exit from Wyoming, based on plan-tracking sources. Because county-level details can shift, confirm availability for your specific ZIP code rather than relying on a headline number.

05

Core benefits are being promoted for 2027

UnitedHealthcare says about 90% of eligible people with access to its plans will have a $0 premium option, and that nearly all members will have $0 primary care visits, preventive care, and Tier 1 drug copays. That speaks to UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage benefits for 2027, but your own plan's documents are what actually apply to you.

Why is UnitedHealthcare changing Medicare plans?

The company and the broader industry point to the same pressure: costs.

UnitedHealthcare has said that Medicare Advantage funding hasn't kept pace with rising medical and pharmacy costs. The federal government did finalize an average 2.48% payment increase for Medicare Advantage in 2027, which was larger than an earlier proposal, but insurers have still been trimming parts of their portfolios where plans are less profitable.

UnitedHealthcare isn't alone. Humana has said its own 2027 exits will affect about 600,000 members, and an analysis cited by Healthcare Dive found that insurers broadly reduced benefits for 2027. At the same time, CMS projects that more than 99% of Medicare beneficiaries will still have at least one Medicare Advantage plan available, and 97% will have ten or more choices — so the market is reshaping, not vanishing.

What to do if UnitedHealthcare drops my plan

If you received a non-renewal notice, the timeline is specific.

What to do if my Medicare Advantage plan is discontinued: first, read the notice carefully — it will name your plan and spell out your options. Members of the discontinued plan can enroll in another Medicare Advantage plan between October 15 and December 31, 2026, for coverage beginning January 1, 2027.

If you don't choose anything, you'll automatically return to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027. In that case, you'll have a special election period through February 28, 2027 to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan. You can read how special enrollment periods work on Medicare.gov.

If you'd rather stay on Medicare instead of choosing another plan, you'll also want a way to cover the gaps. Pairing it with a Medicare Supplement plan and a standalone Medicare Part D drug plan is the common route. One caution: outside certain protected situations, Medicare Supplement insurers in many states can ask health questions, so confirm your rights before you leave your current coverage.

If you didn't get a notice, still review your plan

Renewing plans can change too, even without being discontinued.

Wondering will UnitedHealthcare Medicare benefits change in 2027 on a plan that is simply renewing? Possibly. Your Annual Notice of Change spells out any shifts to premiums, deductibles, Medicare Advantage out-of-pocket costs, drug coverage, networks, and extra benefits. CMS projects the average Medicare Advantage premium to fall to about $12 in 2027, but averages hide a lot of variation from plan to plan.

So are UnitedHealthcare Medicare plans getting more expensive in 2027? It depends on the plan. Some members may see lower premiums while others see changes to copays, out-of-pocket maximums, or supplemental benefits. The only reliable way to know is to read your own notice and compare it against alternatives.

How to compare UnitedHealthcare Medicare plans

A short, repeatable process works whether you stay or switch.

When you compare Medicare Advantage plans, start with your doctors and prescriptions. Check that each doctor is in the plan's network, especially if you're moving from a PPO to an HMO, and run your medications against the plan's formulary. Wondering how to find a new Medicare Advantage plan for 2027? The Medicare Plan Finder lets you search by ZIP code and see premiums, costs, and benefits side by side.

Then look past the premium. Add up the deductible, copays, and out-of-pocket maximum, and weigh them against how often you actually use care. A thorough Medicare plan comparison also considers star ratings and any extras you rely on, like dental, vision, or hearing. Comparing Medicare plan alternatives, including Medicare Advantage plans from other carriers, is worth the time even if your current plan is renewing.

Questions people usually ask

What is happening to UnitedHealthcare plans in 2027?
One Medicare Advantage plan with about 390,000 members is being discontinued, some PPO options and service areas are shrinking, and the company is leaning more toward HMO plans. UnitedHealthcare continues to offer Medicare Advantage broadly.

Is UnitedHealthcare dropping Medicare Advantage plans in 2027?
Partly. It's ending one plan and reducing some local options, but it isn't leaving Medicare Advantage as a whole.

Will UnitedHealthcare discontinue my Medicare plan in 2027?
Only if you received a non-renewal notice. If you didn't, your plan renews for 2027, though its details may change.

What happens if I do nothing after a discontinuation notice?
You'll return to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027, and have until February 28, 2027 to choose a new Medicare Advantage plan. Doing nothing can leave you without drug coverage, so it's worth acting before December 31.

Can I switch plans during Medicare enrollment 2027 even if I wasn't notified?
Yes. The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, and anyone with Medicare can use it to review and change coverage for 2027.

The bottom line

The headlines make it sound like UnitedHealthcare is pulling out of Medicare Advantage, but the confirmed picture is narrower: one plan ending, some PPO and county reductions, and a push toward HMOs. For most people, the practical task is the same as every fall — read your notice, check your doctors and prescriptions, and compare your options before December 7.

If you'd like help, a licensed insurance agent can look up your specific plan, explain what your notice means, and run Medicare enrollment assistance across the plans available where you live, at no cost to you.
