Helping Your Parents Sign Up for Medicare: A Step-by-Step Guide

Turning 65 comes with a mountain of paperwork, deadlines, and unfamiliar acronyms — and for a lot of parents, it's easier to tackle with an adult child sitting alongside them. Here's how to walk your parents through Medicare enrollment without the overwhelm.

If you're the one who ends up fielding the "what does this letter mean?" phone calls, this guide is for you. Below is a clear, ordered path for helping a parent get from "I have no idea where to start" to fully enrolled and confident in their coverage.

Confirm the enrollment window

Most people become eligible for Medicare at 65, with an Initial Enrollment Period that spans seven months — three months before their birthday month, their birthday month, and three months after. Missing this window can mean late penalties, so the very first step is simply marking the exact dates on a calendar.

Understand the difference between Parts A and B

Original Medicare has two halves: Part A covers hospital stays, and Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. Many people qualify for premium-free Part A, but Part B carries a monthly premium. Walk your parent through what each part actually pays for before moving forward, so the rest of the decisions make sense.

Decide between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage

This is usually the biggest decision in the whole process. Original Medicare can be paired with supplemental coverage for broader flexibility, while Medicare Advantage plans bundle hospital, medical, and often drug coverage into one plan through a private insurer, frequently with added benefits like dental or vision. Neither option is universally "better" — it depends on your parent's doctors, budget, and how they prefer to manage care.

Consider a Medicare Supplement plan

If your parent chooses Original Medicare, out-of-pocket costs like copays and coinsurance can add up quickly. A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, helps cover those remaining costs so a hospital stay or specialist visit doesn't turn into an unexpected bill. This step is optional, but worth discussing seriously if your parent wants predictable expenses.

Don't forget prescription drug coverage

Original Medicare doesn't include prescription drug coverage on its own. If your parent isn't choosing a Medicare Advantage plan that already includes it, they'll want to look into Medicare Part D separately. Skipping this step is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes, since late enrollment can mean a permanent penalty added to future premiums.

Gather documents and enroll

Once the decisions are made, enrollment typically happens online through the Social Security Administration, by phone, or in person. Have your parent's Social Security number, employment history, and any current insurance information ready ahead of time to make the process faster.

Review the plan every year

Medicare needs don't stay the same forever. Plans, costs, and covered medications can change annually, so it's worth revisiting your parent's coverage every fall during open enrollment to make sure it still fits their health and budget.

Quick tip: Bring a notepad to any Medicare conversation. Between Parts A, B, D, Advantage, and Supplement plans, it's easy for even adult children to lose track of which option covers what — writing it down as you go makes the final decision much easier.

Quick Reference: Medicare Coverage Options

Medicare

Hospital and medical coverage administered directly through the federal government.

Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered through private insurers.

Medicare Supplement

Optional coverage that helps pay the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind.

Medicare Part D

Standalone prescription drug coverage for those who don't have it through another plan.

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone

Helping a parent enroll in Medicare is one of those tasks that feels bigger than it is, mostly because of the sheer number of acronyms involved. Breaking it into these steps — deadlines, Parts A and B, the Advantage-versus-Original decision, Supplement coverage, and Part D — turns an overwhelming process into a manageable checklist. And when a decision feels too close to call, a licensed agent can walk through the specifics with your family at no cost.

Talk to a licensed agent to compare Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Medicare Part D options for your family.
